The launch of the PlayStation 5 is quickly approaching, as Sony is still maintaining a holiday season release date. With the launch getting closer, the developers at Sony are starting to answer more questions regarding the PS5. One of the more popular inquiries has been about the PlayStation 4, and if its peripherals will work with the new console. However, the main peripheral in question is the popular DualShock 4 controller. Many are wondering if they will be able to use their PS4 controller on the Ps5 to save money or maintain current comfort. In a recent blog, Sony has said this is not the case.

PlayStation 5 to keep controller exclusivity

Alongside the release of the PS5, Sony is launching a new controller—the DualSense. The design of the new controller is a bit bulkier than previous DualShock iterations, which is likely to help bridge the gap with former Xbox users.

This new design has some PlayStation fans feeling slightly worried, though. A portion of the community would rather keep the comfort they’ve built with the DualShock 4 controller since 2013. However, according to Sony, the PS5 won’t allow for this.

In a recent blog post, the developers revealed that the PS5 will not be compatible with the DualShock 4 controller in most ways. Essentially, you can’t play new PS5 titles with a DualShock 4, but you can use it with supported PS4 titles. Here’s their exact quote: "No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller."

The PlayStation 5 will allow for some backwards compatibility. There’s a select amount of games, deemed the most popular of the PS4 era, that will be playable on the PS5. For most of these titles, it seems a DualShock 4 will be allowed. However, for the newer games, you must use a DualSense controller.

While expected, this is another blow to PlayStation users. The Xbox Series X will feature full backwards compatibility with previous controllers. Of course, this likely won’t deter many from buying a PS5, but it is something to take note of.
